Shoji Hamada was one of the most influential potters of the 20th century. He was born in 1894 in Tokyo and died in 1978 in Mashiko, Japan. Hamada's work was influenced by a wide variety of folk ceramics including English medieval pottery, he traveled extensively including trips with Bernard Leach and was involved in the early years of the St Ives Pottery
